Component 1: Magazine Task

For reference all the magazines analyzed will be put at the bottom of the page.

What are the conventions found in the magazine? Position of images, text, fonts, plugs, masthead, skyline, baseline, coverline, etc.

Hemispheres- Has very minimalistic use of text to preserve room for the background image of a mountain. The headline is spread out to take up the majority of the page. The caption / story text is near the center of the screen so the reader’s eyes are drawn to it

Travel and Tour- The color scheme features a unique yellowish-green which draws attention. All the text is very big and placed at either the top or bottom of the page. The center area is used for captions and the main photo of someone surfing.

Outlook Traveller- The main photo is a mosaic-like art piece that features intricate ways of capturing a plane flying through the reflection of a woman’s glasses. The text font is very exaggerated and matches the magazine’s style. The main text is large and the captions are very small underneath the main text.

What do the elements in the cover represent? (Denotation and Connotation)

Hemispheres- The elements connotate the clear, serene, calm aura of the mountain view in the background. The colors are plain white, blue, and black, similar to the photo.

Travel and Tour- The vibrant colors and big text connotate the excitement and adventure of travel. The photo accompanies this feeling of adventure as it shows a group of people with surfboards infront of the ocean.

Outlook Traveller- The quirky colors and art of the front page connotates how this magazine expresses the value of travelling to culture rich areas aswell as the value of travelling in a relarionship.

Analyse the contents page and double page spread (Denotation and Connotation)

Hemispheres- Similar to the front page, the contents page is very plain with a few images here and there. The double page spread retains the basic black and white color scheme, but incorporates pictures to add color to the page. Like a traditional magazine it incorporates articles. The article on the left page is cleverly arranged to avoid going into the picture.

Travel and Tour- Unlike the front page, the contents page here does not retain the bright yellowish-green color scheme. It instead chooses the darker blue that was also on the front page. The pictures are placed at the top of the page likely so it’s the first thing they see. The double page spread has a totally different color aswell. It uses a maroon-like color that contrasts the black outlining the photosnand the white behind the photos.

Outlook Traveller- The pages are very vibrant and include photos in the background. The font is very modern and uses mostly all lowercase letters to possibly emphasize a relaxing vibe. On the double page spread there is a collage of photos that share a similar color of orange. The orange represents adventure or maybe once again relaxation as one of the “oranges” is a sunset.

Who is the audience for this magazine and how is the magazine appealing to it? (be specific)

Hemispheres- Those who are extremely interested in travelling and everything surrounding that. We see the magazine even including houses for sale in travel destinations for their audience who might be interested.

Travel and Tour- Those interested in an adventure or are business travellers. We know this because the city of Riga is said to be good for getting “Europe and Asian market”. It appeals to the adventure side by describing the city’s culture and traditions.

Outlook Traveller- Similar to travel and tour; those interested in an adventure or travelling. Every page represents images of travel destinations, whether it be an actual photo or a art mosaic.

What genre is the magazine? How is this shown?

Hemispheres- Travel, the magazine from the cover page makes this clear with the caption “30 Trips to Take Across America”.

Travel and Tour- Travel, the magazine is called “Travel and Tour”.

Outlook Traveller- Travel, the magazine shares cities and travel spots with amazing views and things to do.

What features of the magazines analysed will you use/not use in your own magazine?

Hemispheres- I think i’ll use minimalistic colors to make the photos “pop”.

Travel and Tour- I don’t like their constant change of color scheme and the colors themselves are an eyesore.

Outlook Traveller- I will use their feature of always having a photo or representation of travelling or a destination
