Film Opening Research - Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film?

There are 5: Sony, Columbia, Marvel, Sony Pictures Animation, and Pascal Pictures

What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?

The titles with glitchy effects, comic book effects, back story for Peter Parker and a bit for Miles Morales

What connotations do the images carry?

The glitch effect is foreshadowing of the major conflict in the movie, seeing Peter’s backstory aswell is a foreshadowing as the story follows Miles and Peter does not naturally live in the same universe as Miles.

How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?

Comic book like styles are used to reinforce the fact that this movie is an action adventure superhero movie. The genre of comedy is also reinforced through Mile’s struggles with his father as he is embarrassed by him.

How does the film establish an enigma from the outset?

Like I mentioned above we see Peter Parker’s backstory, but then it cuts to Miles Morales’ life, making us wonder what connects the two as there has to be a reason to put his backstory. We also see the glitch effect which affects a majority of the screen so it draws the audience’s attention giving them a clue as to what may happen.

What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

Relation through the character of Miles, Miles’ character appeals to teenagers due to his desire to stray away from his parents, the struggle of going to a new school, and even through the use of pop culture as Miles at the beginning is listening to a song by Post Malone and Swae Lee, two popular rappers.

How has technology been used effectively? You might want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques.

For starters the entire film is animated, but they implement elements of comic books to the movie. For example: hit text effects like “Boom” or “Kapow” appear on screen whenever something relative to the sound happens (I put an example of this below). This is using the characters effectively as the Spider-Man characters originated as comic book characters so it’s a beautiful mixture that plays well together with the story.
